Cronin and Lewin have teamed up again in one of their funniest books yet. In Dooby Dooby Moo, Duck has organized Farmer Brown's menagerie to perform in a talent show at the county fair. The animals practice on the sly: the cows rehearse Dooby Dooby Moo, sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; the sheep are singing Home on the Range in the key of baa; and the pigs want to perform an interpretive dance. The first prize is a trampoline, the second prize is a box of chalk, and the third prize is a veggie chop-o-matic. Farmer Brown suspects something is up. He even goes as far as to don a ridiculously funny disguise so he can spy on the animals, but as usual, he can't prove anything. In the end, the reader learns that one of the animal performing groups have won first prize in the contest, because Farmer Brown, while eavesdropping from behind the barn door, hears 'Dooby dooby Boing! Fa, la, la, la Boing! Whacka, whacka Boing!' The book is laden with adult humor, though it is still understandable and enjoyable from a child's point of view. For example, a disclaimer at the end states, 'The events and characters depicted in this picture book are fictitious. Any similarity to actual persons, living or otherwise, is purely coincidental.' And the fine print on the contest rules and regulations indicates that the first prize, which is a trampoline, is 'Slightly used. Sponsor makes no warranty, expressed or implied, nor assumes any responsibility in the use of the trampoline.' These little sidebars of humor are obviously geared toward parents, and are written in small print so as not to distract the focus from the main story. It is fun for children to see other children, as represented by animals in this case, outwitting adults, and Dooby Dooby Moo is a great addition to the series of wry-humored children's picture books by Cronin and Lewin.
