In 2002, a man disappears over a bluff at an anti-war rally in Port Silva, California, thus setting off a string of murders and assaults. PIs Verity and Patience MacKellar become enmeshed in finding missing persons, calming the local citizenry, juggling their love lives, and caring for a precocious nine-year old who is not their own.

Sound complicated. It is at times, but Janet LaPierre keeps all her puppet strings untangled as she all too soon reaches a very satisfying ending. LaPierre uses plenty of action to keep the plot moving and has populated her work with people who have the flaws and idiosyncrasies we all have. She has written a book that flows, making the reader feel they are walking the streets of Port Silva.

If you're not familiar with this series, you should be. You're in for a treat, as there are eight previous mysteries awaiting you.
