This is a book that explores family relationships while changing place from the rustic environment of Fraser Valley in B.C. to the richness of metropolitan Vietnam. Add to this the intrigue of a lost father in a strange land and the ingredients are in place for an excellent reading journey.

Charles Boatman, the father, returns to Vietnam after a 29-year absence in search of redemption from the nightmares that have plagued his life. After he goes missing, his daughter Ada and son Jon follow his steps to Danang.

At a different level the book explores the victimization of war. In this case, on the young American Charles Boatman as well as a parallel story of a young Vietnamese. Many of these passages are the most moving and memorable.

This book is bursting with images both routine and exotic. The language is lyrically rich and very carefully crafted. All this enhances a story that by itself makes an interesting read. If you like your books thoughtful, culturally mysterious and well written then The Time in Between is for you.
