Author Sarah Bilston is a welcome new kid on the block. Her first offering, Bed Rest, is a beguiling read that keeps the reader turning the pages - and it ends all too soon.

But the characters linger behind. Lawyer Quinn 'Q' Boothroyd is an English transplant married to an American lawyer living in Manhattan. Though on the typical race for the top, they both decide that the time is right for a baby. Everything goes according to plan until the baby decides it doesn't like the ride and is about to get off the train - unless Q gets complete bed rest for the last three months of her pregnancy.

Her diary gives her something to do while lying prone, gestating. In addition to their joint concern about their son, Q and her husband Tom have other worries to contend with. In particular, will their marriage survive the tensions created by the enforced bed rest, and by Tom's dedication to achieving partner status at his law firm?

Q's diary is revealing, the workings of the mind under stress creating a revealing and insightful story; one that charms and angers at the same time. I found myself entering her discussions with herself and others. Sarah Bilston is a delightful new author who is hard at work on her sequel, Sleepless Nights. I look forward to it.
