Clare and Mary are best friends at preschool. They do everything together and always tell each other that they are the other's best friend.

One day at school, it is Mary's birthday, and she receives special attention. Predictably, this produces jealous feelings in Clare, and the two best friends squabble. They spend the day apart, but when school is over, all is well and they resume their friendship as if nothing has happened.

This sweet story demonstrates both the beauty of childhood, and the intensity and resiliency of children.

Chodos-Irvine is the author of Ella Sarah Gets Dressed, a Caldecott Honor Book. She is known for using a variety of printmaking techniques, resulting in a blunt, simplistic and vivid illustrative style.
