This is the third of Mallory Loehr's Magic Elements Quartet, following Water Wishes and Earth Magic. In each episode, young Polly, her brother Sam, and another relative encounter magic related to Greek myth.

This time, Polly and Sam are with their elder brother Joe on a family camping trip when three white feathers fall from the sky, as the wind whispers, 'Catch'. While Polly and Sam are immediately ready for their next magical adventure, Joe is skeptical, until he sees white words against the blue sky, soon followed by a paper airplane with brief instructions and scant clues.

They meet a ranger (Herman/Hermes) with wings on his hat, and a glowing owl lady librarian who just might be Athena, goddess of wisdom, leads them on a quest to find the endangered bird that belongs to their feathers. She tells the children that 'A combination of question and observation is at the root of all learning.'

Daedalus warns the trio of the dangers of flying, but lets them earn their wings. They embark on a perilous flight, seeking Bellerephon, who once rode Pegasus. Helping each other, they succeed in their latest magical quest and win an apt reward.
