She then explains how to make one of your own in detail, with delightful examples of many different small and large inuksuit. The author advises thinking about the intent of your inuksuk before starting and picking the stones carefully - she explains how different shapes can convey meaning, and gives instructions for safely breaking flagstone into smaller pieces. She discusses how to make the construction sturdy, the (non-traditional) incorporation of adhesives to hold it together, and how to select a special (and meaningful) spot for it. Why build an inuksuk? Mary Wallace tells us that it is 'a timeless symbol of our close connection with the earth', and can be built to express friendship or joy, welcome, or as a guide to a special place. It's also the central symbol in the flag of Canada's newest (1999) territory, Nunavut. Use this informative book to make your own inuksuk - my family plan to do so this summer.
