Lewin opens with an Author's Note: 'Markets are found everywhere. They are found in dusty Egyptian deserts. They float on canals in Thailand ... And there is a market in New Jersey where one person's junk becomes another's treasure.'

He then proceeds to introduce markets around the world with colorful illustrations and evocative text. The first is a Thai floating market near Bangkok - I've been there and it looked just like the picture. We enter an evening flower market in Madras, India, and then step off the train to Macchu Picchu for the Agua Calientes market in Peru. After that, off to Egypt for a camel market outside Cairo. And finally we check out a flea market in New Jersey, and an Ethiopian one in Brooklyn.

Ted Lewin paints these busy markets for us in bright pictures and revealing words. He even introduces us to their tastes and odors, from the foul-smelling (but delicious) South East Asian durian fruit to the 'Cut-green smell' of delicate Indian blossoms. And he shows us what all these markets have in common - 'No matter how you say it or where you say it, buying, selling, trading, and bargaining is a language we all understand.'
