Caruso is a bird who is afraid to fly. One day, he is blown away by a gust of wind and lands on the windowsill of Sophie the dog. Sophie befriends the bird and helps him find his way home as he rides on her back.

After he is safely at home, Caruso misses Sophie and wonders if he will see her again. With the promise of a new friendship, and the encouragement of his new friend ringing in his ears, Caruso finally conquers his fear of flying. He flies to her windowsill, and the two of them play all day.

This is story about finding your wings, literally, and the power of friendship. It also shows that a good deed will not go unrewarded. Friendship, especially between different species, is a familiar theme for Keller, whose earlier picture book, Farfallina and Marcel, explores the relationship between a gosling and a caterpillar who turns into a butterfly.

The watercolor illustrations are very simple without a lot of detail, perfect for this story that contains a simple message. Especially appealing are the joyful expressions on Sophie and Caruso's faces as they find each other once again.
