What makes the 'Literary Birthday Book' unusual are David Levine's wonderful caricatures of literary figures, taken from the pages of the New York Review. Caricatures are included on the writer's birthdays. I picked out a few of my own favorites: J. R. R. Tolkien reminds me of Bilbo on January 3rd, Robert Frost highlights March 26, there's Shakespeare on April 23rd, George Bernard Shaw shows on July 26th, and Roald Dahl on September 13th. At the back is space for Notes for 2007, followed by lists of Nobel Prize for Literature winners (1901-2004), Pulitzer Prize winners (1918-2005) and Man Booker Prize winners (1969-2004). If there's a literati on your gift list, wrap up The New York Review of Books 2006 Desk Diary for them, or tuck it into their stocking - it's simple but unusual.
