T
he delightful cover illustration shows Mr. George, '
a friendly little squirrel
', peering at his red-hatted reflection in a park stream. Finding the hat under a tree, he speculates about where it came from, and which other animal might have worn it. After seeing himself in it, Mr. George decides that it was meant for him.
T
he red hat comes in very handy for gathering acorns and peanuts, and can be hung on a branch while picnicking in a tree. Mr. George loves wearing the hat, and enjoys the admiration of other park animals. But he gives it away when a mother bird needs a home for her new family. Then, all the animals '
showered him with wildflowers
' for his kindness.
M
r. George and the Red Hat
is a sweet, simple, beautifully illustrated story. Kids will relate to this small squirrel - to both his vanity and his generosity - and may be encouraged to share their own possessions in the future.
