This is the seventh in a series of thrillers that feature Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor Alexandra Cooper. What I enjoy about these books - aside from the engaging banter between Alex and her cop associates (Mike and Mercer), and the credible cases and departmental politics - are the fascinating New York locations and historical backgrounds that Fairstein digs up as story backdrops.

This time, Alex investigates two major cases. When a young Swedish student is violently attacked, and after a four year hiatus, 'the Silk Stocking Rapist is back in business'. Determined to get him this time, Alex initiates a 'John Doe indictment'. Then, a corpse is found, a young woman who appears (horrifyingly) to have been buried alive in the 60s in 'Poe House', where Edgar Allan Poe once lived. It's the 'ghost of an awful crime'. The famed master of horror is a character in his own right in the novel, bringing his own mysterious background to the mix.

There are a variety of people who have 'an unhealthy obsession with Edgar Allan Poe' and more deaths quickly follow at locations with links to Poe's life and works. The sinister 'Raven Society' is implicated, there's more than one terrifying attack on Alex herself, tragedy hits one of her colleagues, and action and violence escalate to a crescendo at the Botanical Gardens. Of course, Alex gets her killer. She finally nails the Silk Stocking Rapist too, and readers learn a lot about 'tormented genius' Edgar Allan Poe along the way.

If you haven't met Alex Cooper yet, start at the beginning. If you're already a fan, you'll love Entombed and wonder, as I do, if romance is in the air between Alex and one of her cohorts. We'll just have to wait to find out.
