Origami Holiday Decorations: For Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa    by Florence Temko Order:  USA  Can Tuttle, 2003 (2003) Softcover      Reviewed by Hilary Williamson The first thing I liked about this origami handbook is that it's inclusive, with 25 projects covering Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. The second thing I liked is that it begins with clear instructions on origami techniques (including how to cut paper squares) and also introduces the holidays themselves. Helpful tips include choice of paper, and an origami FAQ is provided. Do spend some time trying the individual techniques, as it makes it much easier, and faster, to fold the holiday decorations afterwards. Decoration projects range from a very simple icicle (6 of which can be combined to make a snowflake card), a dreidel, three kings, and Christmas tree, to a Torah scroll, Christmas stockings, a candle (and Kinara candle holder), a turkey, a Santa Claus and reindeer, and a Kwanzaa bowl. Some of the designs are utilitarian, like the message rack, holiday calendar, or picture frame. There's a butterfly design for festive napkins on the holiday table (will definitely use that one), and a holiday wreath than can be made to fit any of the three traditions. My fourteen-year-old, who enjoys origami, quickly folded the most difficult designs in this handbook. Origami Holiday Decorations would make an excellent gift, suitable for the origami novice as well as the experienced folder, and its creations will impress all who see them during the festive season.
