I don't usually like horror stories, but though Melinda Metz pens hers in dripping scarlet, she also gives us engaging characters and puzzles a-plenty to grab and hold a reader's interest.

On the small island of Raven's Point, Jane Romano's life has been over-shadowed by the accident that left her beloved brother Elijah in a coma, and set her parents at odds with each other. Jane secretly admires school basketball superstar Seth McFadden, who doesn't seem to notice her. Elijah's girlfriend Tavia Burrows is trying to move on, and has started to date again. All seem normal to you? It's not, and don't read this book alone in the dark!

There's something very wrong on Raven's Point, a past horror that's been suppressed but is growing stronger every day and bringing out the worst in people, who begin to do terrible things to those they hate ... and to those they love. Jane finds herself taking trips as an observer into the past. Seth sees ghosts, including that of the friend whose death caused his current bulimia. Tavia finds that she has a disturbing rapport with animals. And Elijah wakes up.

Even if you're like me and don't usually go for the genre, try Raven's Point. It's totally engrossing, occasionally gruesome (sometimes even gross, as in the actions of the 'therapy dog') and full of twists and surprises right to the very end. If you're a fan of horror, then rush out to get yourself a copy.
