The subtitle of The City Parent Handbook is 'The Complete Guide to the Ups and Downs and Ins and Outs of Raising Young Kids in the City'. The book is loaded with tips that you may not think of yourself, especially in the case of a first child. It begins by discussing family life in the city, starting with the highlights of apartment life with children. Advice ranges from space management and most suitable pets to mold, bunk bed safety, and decorating. A chapter is dedicated to hiring 'Daycare', which may be a big part of your youngster's life. Important questions to ask a potential caregiver are included.

The next part of the book moves us around the city, with playground etiquette and advice on sports for the older kids. One chapter covers ethnic eating, suggesting what kinds of foods to order for your child, telling for example how to ask for rice in another language. The cheat sheet of foods is especially handy if you have a picky eater. The third part of the book is a must read in my opinion. Here we find tips to finding the perfect preschool for your child. Benefits of public versus private schooling are discussed. Chapters include how to make applications, testing conditions, and handling of interviews - mistakes to avoid are covered. This information is very helpful in finding the best educational fit for your child.

This is an ideal handbook for parents of children living in the city, though much of the information is useful no matter the location. The tips and tricks given by Kathy Bishop and Julia Whitehead are sure to make your life easier. The research that went into this book amazes me. The details that pertain to city life are also of use while vacationing in the city. Keep The City Parent Handbook on your parenting shelf; you'll refer to it often.
