The cover shows cheerful piglets skipping rope, in friendly (delicately painted) fall colors. Opal is back, visiting Toot and Puddle in Woodcock Pocket in a 'sunny October' with golden leaves all around. With Opal is her friend Daphne, a talented gymnast.

Whatever she does, Daphne does 'perfectly', from standing on one leg to playing a Mozart violin concerto - 'she's better at everything', which is hard on her friend Opal. But when they do things that Daphne isn't so good at, she acts like 'a bit of a prima donna'. Then something happens that makes Daphne acknowledge Opal's talents.

The New Friend is a charming tale about the development of confidence in a friendship, with the recognition that 'Everyone is different and everyone is good at different things'.
