Periwinkle has lost everyone close to her ... her father to the sea, her mother to grief and even the old woman who taught her small magics. Peri scrubs floors at the inn, neglects her appearance and lives in the old woman's house, made from driftwood. In her anger and frustration, she attempts to hex the sea.

Then she meets and falls in love with the king's son, Kir, who longs for the country beneath the waves. A sea-dragon appears and watches the village and fishermen. It is chained to the ocean deeps by heavy gold links. The villagers covet the gold and send for magic workers. After many charlatans Lyo appears. He is a real mage and succeeds in undoing the chain ... but turns it into periwinkles. Then the sea-dragon comes on shore.

The Changeling Sea is a romantic, magical tale, told with McKillip's light and deft style. Peri longs for what she cannot have, but instead ends up with a king's gratitude and true love.
