Douglas Florian combines whimsical poetry about mammals with delightful illustrations 'done in gouache on primed brown paper bags' and words that wiggle, in a style that reminded me of James Stevenson's Corn series.

Mammalabilia introduces animals from 'The Aardvarks' - 'Aardvarks aare odd. / Aardvarks aare staark. / Aardvarks look better / By faar in the daark.' - to 'The Tiger', 'I hunt at night--I am tigerrrr.' All the verses charmed me, but I especially liked 'The Gorilla' - 'It's stilla / Gorilla-- / Don't get in its face.' - and enjoyed the succinctness of 'The Beaver', and the way 'The Coyote' howl rises off the page.

I always enjoyed reading poetry with my children when they were small, and it's wonderful to find a picture book like Mammalabilia, whose humor works at levels that both old and young can appreciate in their own ways - highly recommended!
