Mammalabilia    by Douglas Florian Order:  USA  Can Voyager, 2004 (2000) Hardcover, Softcover Read an Excerpt      Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Douglas Florian combines whimsical poetry about mammals with delightful illustrations 'done in gouache on primed brown paper bags' and words that wiggle, in a style that reminded me of James Stevenson's Corn series. Mammalabilia introduces animals from 'The Aardvarks' - 'Aardvarks aare odd. / Aardvarks aare staark. / Aardvarks look better / By faar in the daark.' - to 'The Tiger', 'I hunt at night--I am tigerrrr.' All the verses charmed me, but I especially liked 'The Gorilla' - 'It's stilla / Gorilla-- / Don't get in its face.' - and enjoyed the succinctness of 'The Beaver', and the way 'The Coyote' howl rises off the page. I always enjoyed reading poetry with my children when they were small, and it's wonderful to find a picture book like Mammalabilia, whose humor works at levels that both old and young can appreciate in their own ways - highly recommended!
