Worm's best friend is Spider, and they have fun as each fails to teach the other what he does best. We learn about the perils of fishing season, and sidewalk crawling, and the joys of making girls scream. Worm shares his goal of becoming a Secret Service agent, a particularly dangerous job for his species, and tells us his three top likes and dislikes. I especially enjoyed the diary entry about politeness, which resulted in Worm saying good morning to a line of six hundred ants - it reminded me of a similar experience with a long line of hikers in the Japanese Alps. Kids will love the book's humor, which tickles adult funny bones as well. Diary of a Worm is cute, earnest and engaging, with a sound environmental message lurking under its topsoil - great fun!
