Last Boat to Camden Town is fast paced with delightful characters. Written without an unnecessary word, it is based in North London. Who ever heard of a CID Inspector with compassion? That is what Christy Kennedy is, and his coworkers seem to follow his lead. Refreshing.

Dr. Edmond Berry is fished from the shallow waters of the Camden Canal – too late to save his life. Suicide? Carelessness? Murder? Kennedy isn't sure and pursues his own inclinations to a successful climax. I have to say I guessed the outcome, but that did not diminish my pleasure in this short mystery. While investigating Berry's death, Kennedy is also working on his feelings for a woman who seems to want only his friendship. What ensues is a wonderfully tender courtship, one in which the author shows great insight into the feelings inspired by the flutters of budding love.

Interestingly, Paul Charles is one of Europe's best-known music promoters and agents. He's clearly found another venue for his creativity. I do hope his other pursuits allows him the time to write another novel about Christy Kennedy and his girlfriend, ann rea. (Right, lower case - ann prefers it that way.) Last Boat to Camden Town is a lovely little book from the other side of the big pond.
