Midnight Patriots    by Paul Levine Order:  USA  Can Herald Square, 2026 (2026) Softcover, e-Book      Reviewed by Barbara Lingens Set in the pre-WW II years and replete with so many (maybe too many) famous names, Midnight Patriots is the story of how Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin (old friends) meet several kinds of Nazi spies and manage to elude their nefarious plots. In between all of the action, which is really quite stirring, much is made of Chaplin's The Great Dictator, a recently released movie that aroused Hitler's ire. The other important theme is nuclear research, an area where the U.S. felt itself to be behind Germany, and which is the subject of many conversations in the book. A very real star in the book is the Santa Fe Super Chief, on which much of the action takes place. Its every luxury is truly wonderfully described. Paul Levine, a very prolific writer, must have had a lot of fun with this one. His Afterword is just as beautiful as the thriller and details his real-life characters' lives both before and after the story as well as where fiction trumps fact. A very fun read.
