John McMahon's Inside Man is second in his Head Cases series, featuring the FBI's Patterns and Recognition (PAR) unit, that uses lead Gardner Camden's puzzle solving genius on seemingly unsolvable cases.

In this sequel, Gardner's oddball team investigate a domestic militia group run by arms dealer Sandoval and stockpiling weapons. As the story opens, he and his current partner, Joanne 'Shooter' Harris find their confidential informant murdered in Florida - but not by the militia. They badly need a new CI, and make a plan.

They find a link between their dead informant and a cold case - a serial killer in Florida, with at least ten kills to his name. They dub him El Medico, use their talents to investigate, and find bodies. Information they unearth starts to point to a terrorist attack in DC, and they lose another CI.

Inside Man reads like a police procedural, but is enlivened by Gardner's interactions with his colleagues (Richie and Cassie as well as Shooter) and especially with his brilliant young daughter Camila. He does solve both cases but comes very close to becoming the killer's final victim.
