There Will be Bodies follows Death on the Tiber as the thirteenth in Lindsey Davis's Flavia Albia series that is a continuation of her very popular Marcus Didius Falco mysteries set in ancient Rome. Informer Flavia Albia is very much a chip off the old block! Our heroine is married to Tiberius Manlius Faustus and their household includes his twin nephews, Gaius and Lucius.

The title of this episode is also its first sentence as Tiberius warns workmen they might uncover bodies killed when Mount Vesuvius erupted a decade before covering towns in this area around the Bay of Naples. Tiberius's wealthy uncle Tullius has bought a villa there and given Albia's husband the task of digging it out and dealing with any remains found. The previous owner's body is discovered - in a locked storeroom - and he didn't die in the eruption.

Of course, Albia starts digging into the case and soon they find the bodies of three slaves, left in chains to die, along with a toddler. Albia is outraged and determined to find out who was responsible. She contacts the owner's sister and her caretakers; is kidnapped and imprisoned with the Seventh Cohort's missing tribune; and rescued by a flautist. But of course she does dig up the truth from the ashes.
