He and his partner Willow Reeve now live in Orkney. They have a four-year-old son, James, and Willow is pregnant with their second child. Jimmy's adopted teen daughter Cassie is in Shetland for the school holidays. Christmas is coming. The Prologue introduces the victim, Archie Stout on the island of Westray. Troubled, he decides to talk to 'his oldest and closest friend', Jimmy Perez. He never gets the chance. Called by Archie's frantic wife Vaila, Jimmy heads to Westray, and finds Archie's corpse close to an old archaeological dig. He was murdered, hit with a Neolithic story stone taken from a nearby museum. It turns out that both its story stones are no longer there. Jimmy is too close to the case but also very puzzled as Archie was loved on Westray 'for the warmth of his smile and his generosity.' He soon hears rumours that Archie had fallen for a young Englishwoman who makes jewelry from silver and sea glass and sells it online. The plot thickens fast as Willow flies in to take charge. More bodies are found. Perez and Willow follow separate leads, but come together for a grand finale - and a sorrowful conclusion - on Christmas Day.
