opens on a birthday party at a family mansion in southern France. Readers share the point of view of six-year-old Nina who finds '
a dead girl in the water
' of the swimming pool, '
and only Nina knows what happened to her.
' The corpse was that of her elder sister, seventeen-year-old Tamara Drayton.

hat sets things up nicely and the story then jumps ahead two decades. Nina, despite her youth, had testified at the murder trial of her babysitter, Josie Jackson. But all these years later, she becomes unsure of what she really saw and how much her testimony was influenced by those around her.
N
ow, years of therapy later, Nina has a postgrad degree as a clinical psychologist and is about to work in a small London clinic. When she gets an interview request from criminology student Imogen who is preparing a true crime documentary about Tamara's murder, Nina flies to southern France, feeling the need for answers herself.
T
he story moves back and forth in time, revealing more and more of past events and motivations, including the involvement of Tamara's twin brother Blake and Josie's best friend Hannah. Nina works with others seeking the truth and it finally is unveiled.
