Gone in the Night follows All the Way Gone as the fifth in Joanna Schaffhausen's mystery series starring ex-Detective Annalisa Vega in Chicago. She's now a PI, married again to cop Nick Carelli, and pregnant with their first child. Annalisa's favorite brother Alex is in prison for murder, and she's the one who put him there.

This episode opens on a killing, no surprise there. Then, Alex asks Anna to visit him in prison and then pushes her to take on the case of a fellow inmate, Joe Green, who claims he did not murder his ex-wife's lawyer, despite a witness claiming she saw him dragging the victim into the lake when she was walking her dog. Now, he's received a typed note that says the witness was lying, and it turns out that she never had a dog.

Anna takes on the investigation, despite the fact that Nick had been the one to arrest Joe, and of course it creates tension between them. Then more victims are killed, marked and left in the lake in the same manner as Joe Green's case - a serial killer is in play. Various interrelated subplots add interest to the story, which takes very surprising twists and turns - and puts Nick at high risk.
