For Duck's Sake follows Rockin' Around the Chickadee as the thirty-seventh entry in Donna Andrews' popular cozy mystery series starring Meg Langslow and her ever growing entourage in Caerphilly.

As this episode opens, Meg's brother Rob, his wife Delaney and their new baby Brynn have just moved into a century-old farmhouse they'd bought from Iris Rafferty (who's retained life rights to its mother-in-law suite). Meg is there to escape the Mutt March ('a combination animal adoption event and fundraiser for the local shelter') being set up on her own property. Workmen, bulldozing to build a duck pond, dig up a skeleton! Soon afterwards, Iris disappears.

Complicating matters is a threat to the dogs from a dogfighting ring; the fact that Deputy Vern might have known the victim; claims of a buried treasure; and the involvment of 'brainless louts in Clay County.' As we expect, Meg ends up in the thick of the investigation (and in danger) as well as the Mutt March. She survives with help from Iris, who is far from the frail old lady some consider her.
