hough they're definitely over the top, I enjoy Alice Henderson's environmental thrillers for their fascinating settings, constant action, and insights into different endangered species. Previous episodes focused on wolverines, polar bears and caribou. This time, it's all about jaguars.

ildlife biologist Alex Carter heads to a large desert sanctuary in New Mexico, near the Gila National Forest, a prime jaguar habitat where she'll do a '
species presence survey
'. In a nearby town, she encounters anti-immigrant vigilantes who toss Molotov cocktails, and comes upon them later attacking archaeologists at their dig, a Spanish conquistador's gravesite.

target Alex as well, once they learn why she's there. They don't want any changes made to allow endangered species to cross the border wall. Alex finds odd holes all over the preserve and wonders about their purpose, and readers are shown the theft of an ancient torque, and a wealthy man's quest for artefacts, tied into these escalating events.

here is more and more violence and people die. The grand crescendo of this episode is a long desert hunt, in which Alex is the prey. Fortunately for her, an old comrade who had her back before, shows up again and helps her save the day.
