Standing in the Shadows follows Not Dark Yet as the twenty-eighth in Peter Robinson's deservedly popular police procedural series starring Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks in Yorkshire, England.

DI Annie Cabbot, DS Winsome Jackman, and DC Geraldine Masterson (all very strong women) assist in investigations. In the previous episode, Annie's father Ray died. He's been in a relationship with super recognizer Zelda, a victim of sex trafficking. Under investigation by police and by Immigration Enforcement, Zelda disappeared (with Alan's help). As this episode opens, a grieving Annie is on leave.

Readers learn about a cold case, back in 1980, from the point of view of student Nick Hartley. His ex-girlfriend, Alice Poole (whose flat was above his), was murdered. Nick came under suspicion himself but always suspected Alice's new, older boyfriend, Mark Woodcroft. He was never found, and police didn't seem to pursue the case actively. Nick became an investigative journalist and kept looking for answers.

Fast forward to 2019, when a modern skeleton is found at a Roman archaeology dig. DS Alan Banks and team start to do their own digging. They have trouble identifying the body but eventually find links to an ongoing investigation of undercover policing, of a group that 'lost their moral compass'. Banks gets a confession, but still has to work to get the full picture of what happened all those years before.
