Into the Windwracked Wilds follows Along the Saltwise Sea as the third in Seanan McGuire's (writing as A. Deborah Baker) Up-and-Under tween fantasy series.

The leads, rule-following Avery and impulsive Zib, became best friends despite their differences. Together, they climbed a wall to a different world, with its own strange rules and laws. They befriended Crow Girl (who transforms into a murder of crows), and drowned girl Niamh, from a city deep below the ice. After shared adventures, they walked across the Saltwise Sea on the Improbable Road.

Now the road bursts beneath them. They're saved from drowning by a kind mosasaur that swallows them, feeds them, and expels them near land. Unfortunately, it's the lands of the Air, domain of the Queen of Swords 'who made monsters the way some people make daisy chains'. They meet Jack Daw, the queen's son. Despite his attempts to help them, they end up in great peril.

Jack advises Zib to find the room where the queen stores her stolen hearts. She succeeds and the episode ends with our friends back on the Improbable Road, but with an addition to their group - all ready for new adventures.
