Here's a sweet story of friendship and acceptance - The Boy with Flowers in His Hair by Jarvis. The boy (sweet and gentle and liked by all) is David and the narrator of this picture book is his best friend. David always had flowers in his hair.

Then David changed. He started wearing a hat, was quiet, and his hair became all prickly branches. How could a friend help him? He and others made new flowers for David from paper and paint, to give him his color back. After a while, real flowers started to blossom again.

This allegorical tale (aimed at ages 3-7) is about awareness of what friends are going through and rallying around to help when they need it.
