Harrow's outstanding Fractured Fables series. The first book introduced Zinnia Gray. Doomed to die young from fatal teratogenic damage, she was obsessed with Sleeping Beauty. After she touched a spindle's end on her twenty-first birthday, Zinnia crossed dimensions, finding 'versions of the same story, retold in different realities.' She made it her mission to help those 'who deserve better stories than the ones they were given.' After spending the last five years winning happy endings for forty-eight Sleeping Beauty iterations across dimensions, our ('the Dimension-Hopping, Damsel-Saving Badass') is avoiding her best friend Charmaine, now happily wed to Primrose (the first saved princess). So Zinnia pricks her finger again. After the obligatory rescue and party, she looks into a mirror and is faced with 'a woman with high, hard cheekbones and hair coiled like a black silk snake on her head.' Snow White's evil stepmother pulls Zinnia into her dimension. The queen demands Zinnia's assistance to escape her dire fate, threatening to feed her 'beating heart to the carrion birds.' It's not a good start to their relationship, but it does evolve from there and it's not all black and white. They travel between dimensions, sharing adventures and meeting the fairy from Primrose's story once more. Along the way, it becomes clear that 'villains aren't all bad', and that there might be hope for Zinnia's own story's ending after all.
