Best in Snow follows Dog Eat Dog as the twenty-fourth in David Rosenfelt's delightful (though formulaic) series starring reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter (wealthy enough to have no need to work); his ex-cop wife Laurie; their adopted son Ricky; their beloved dogs; and an ever growing train of friends and associates. Many of these same engaging characters also appear in Rosenfelt's K Team series.

This time, Andy's walking the dogs in the snow in Paterson, New Jersey when they come upon the corpse of Mayor Alex Oliva. Turns out the mayor had a young reporter fired for libel after the latter published a negative story about him that turned out to be false. Said reporter, Bobby Nash, is soon arrested for murder. How is Andy enlisted to represent him? As often happens, a friend asks, this time local paper editor Vince Sanders.

Bobby was found unconscious in a crashed car, the victim's blood in the trunk. Seems like a lock for the prosecution, but Andy does well with impossible cases and does so this time too, with help from the usual suspects. Then Bobby's source for his expose of the mayor is murdered as well, and he himself is attacked while in hospital - will he even make it to trial?

Of course, Andy and crew save the day as they always do, but the fun is in the journey and the banter among participants along the way. This is the best of cozy mystery series.
