The Bitter Taste of Murder follows Murder in Chianti as the second in Camilla Trinchieri's Tuscan Mystery series starring half Italian, half Irish, former NYPD homicide detective Nico Doyle. Mourning the loss of his beloved wife, he moved to Gravigna in the Chianti region. There, he spends his time renovating a run-down farmhouse and helping at his sister-in-law Tilde's restaurant.

This time, the steady pace of life in Gravigna is disrupted by wine critic Michele Mantelli. Through his culinary magazine and blog, he has 'the power to make or ruin a new vintage.' Mantelli seems to have it in for Nico's landlord, vintner Aldo Ferri - why? Unfortunately, the wine critic dies by poison, leaving Aldo as the prime suspect. As before, Maresciallo Perillo asks Nico to help figure out whodunit.

Naturally they get to the bottom of it, but the fun's in the journey through food, wines and countryside as much as in the mystery - and Nico's love life gets a boost in this episode as well.
