Susan Lewis's My Lies, Your Lies takes the reader back and forth in time to explore the consequences of a forbidden love, a teen passion that lasted a lifetime but had tragic consequences.

In the present day, we meet Joely, a ghost writer whose marriage has just broken up. Her husband Callum has moved in with her best friend, and her daughter Holly has joined them. There are some hints that Joely's own behavior and guilt over a past action had a lot to do with it. As this develops, Joely is offered a plum assignment, to work on a memoir for reclusive elderly author Freda Donahoe. To do so, she must stay at Donahoe's rather gothic and very isolated mansion.

The past story reveals the development of a romance between a lovely teenager and her handsome music teacher, Mr. Michaels. It does not end well after he breaks up with her. As Joely starts to read Freda's input to the memoir, she finds that it's about 'a teenage girl on a mission to seduce her music teacher.' As the memoir develops, it's very clear that Freda assigns the blame entirely to the young girl, which leaves Joely uneasy.

The reader is essentially shown two versions of the same story as a long awaited vengeance comes to fruition. Though I found the ending of My Lies, Your Lies rather too good to be true, it's a well crafted and fascinating tale that ends with all kinds of surprises.
