In I Talk Like a River, poet Jordan Scott gives us an empathetic picture book from the perspective of a boy who stutters. He tells us 'I wake up each morning with the sounds of words all around me. And I can't say them all.'

Sydney Smith's flowing images explain and enhance the text. I especially like his depiction of the boy's reflection in a window as he gazes out at things he has trouble speaking of ... 'The C is a crow that sticks in the back of my throat.'

After a tough day at school, dad takes him to a river. He's sad but dad says, 'See how that water moves? That's how you speak.' Knowing he talks like a river makes a difference. Read this book to help a child understand what it's like being different.
