I'm a long time fan of David Rosenfelt's canine mystery series starring reluctant defense lawyer/investigator Andy Carpenter, who is regularly drawn in to taking on cases, because of the dogs involved in them.

Now, here's a spinoff from that popular series, starring old friends as well as new leads introduced in Dachshund Through the Snow. In that episode, Andy successfully defended aging police dog, Simon Garfunkel, a year short of the retirement age of ten. Simon, a German shepherd whose hips were acting up, won early retirement alongside his partner, ex-cop Corey Douglas.

As The K Team opens, Corey and ex-K-9 Simon have teamed up with the love of Andy's life, former cop Laurie Carpenter, and the indomitable (though not very conversational) Marcus. In their first case, they're hired by Judge Henry Henderson, known to all of them as a tough but fair judge. He's being blackmailed, but doesn't know what the blackmailers want from him. He needs the K team to make sense of it all.

It's a real puzzler and the investigation a convoluted one, that forces Corey to cross lines he never would have considered before he hooked up with Marcus and Laurie. Of course they get there in the end and do protect their client's legacy. Along the way, readers get to know, and like, Corey and Simon even more, not to mention Corey's new romantic interest, Dani.
