Act of Murder: Doc Brady #1    by John Bishop Order:  USA  Can Mantid Press, 2020 (2020) Softcover, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Act of Murder is the first entry in John Bishop's Doc Brady series, that takes readers into the busy life of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jim Bob Brady (the author himself practiced orthopedic surgery in Houston, Texas, for three decades). This medical mystery opens in 1994 Houston when the good doctor watches in horror as his neighbor's ten-year-old son Stevie is killed by a hit-and-run driver. The child already had fragile bones, from a bone disease, a genetic syndrome called osteogenesis imperfecta. Detective Susan Beeson investigates the case, and soon asks for Brady's help. Following up on the post-mortem, Brady learns of another child who had recently died - and suffered the same bone disease - a boy who looks very like young Stevie! His curiosity is aroused and he learns that Stevie was adopted. Soon Brady's wife Mary Louise and twenty-year-old son J.J. (a skilled hacker) get in on the action as well. Though, for me, the story lingered rather long on the joys of the Bradys' marital life and on details of the Doc's hospital work, Act of Murder did hold my interest throughout. More murders followed in an unusual plot with a ruthless villain to be brought to justice.
