Heather Webber's Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is a delightfully feel good novel of magical realism set in the small town of Wicklow, Alabama.

Anna Kate returns there on the death of her beloved Granny Zee, from whom she inherits the Blackbird Café, a focal point for all the locals (except for those on her father's side of the family).

Anna Kate comes as quite a surprise to the residents of Wicklow, who didn't know that Granny Zee had a granddaughter. Her daughter Eden had fled the town at age eighteen, after her fiancé's parents blamed her for Andrew James Linden's death in a car accident. Eden never returned and died young herself.

Anna Kate has no intention of staying in Wicklow (she will start medical school soon) and no interest in meeting her father's parents who treated her mother so badly. However, the magic imbued in the pies served at the Blackbird Café eventually changes her as it has affected so many others over the years.

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is a thoroughly heartwarming read that lifts the spirits - highly recommended.
