Don't Say a Word follows Dare You to Lie as the second in Amber Lynn Natusch's edgy Hometown Antihero series. It stars teen Kylene Danner, whose ex-FBI agent father is in prison for murder. Ky's determined to prove his innocence and will do whatever it takes, no matter the risk ... and the risks quickly pile up.

Though I haven't read the first book in the series, I was still able to jump into this second entry, and found it gripping. Ky is one of the strongest female leads I've encountered, and she certainly needs to be. As this episode opens, Ky is still recovering from injuries incurred in Dare You to Lie. Her best friend, Garrett, remains in hospital. The perp (now dead) had taken topless pictures of Ky with her boyfriend AJ's camera - she and Garrett both blamed AJ.

Now Ky returns to Jasperville High, where she's unpopular for her part in the incarceration of a football team player. Ky's friend (and partner in crime) Tabby has her back, but all is complicated by the presence of rookie FBI Agent Cedric Dawson. He saved her life last time around and now is undercover at the high school as her ex. Just what's needed for a love triangle, and one soon develops, given Ky's growing attraction to Cedric and unresolved feelings for AJ.

The action escalates after Jane calls, to say she's been forced into prostitution, but can't go to the police, as the johns are powerful and untouchable. Jane wants Ky's help, given what she achieved before. She says that many have been killed, believed to have simply gone missing. Ky and Cedric investigate. At the same time, Ky pursues her father's case, despite his objections.

All of these plot threads build to a crescendo of action and danger as Ky continues to 'do first, think later'. This second book ends with her decision to take on the powerful - can she survive that? I look forward to finding out.
