It's Mayfair, London soon after the end of World War II, and two very different women meet by chance and get together to start up The Right Sort Marriage Bureau.

Miss Iris Sparks is quick witted, impetuous and resourceful, and can't talk about her involvement in the war effort, which cost her the love of her life. Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge was devastated by the loss of her husband in the war. Her subsequent breakdown left Gwen under the control of her in-laws, who have assumed custody of her son.

Gwen and Iris work well together. Iris's contacts make it easy for her to dig into their clients' backgrounds, while the shock treatment for Gwen's breakdown has left her with premonitions and a knack for matching people up.

The mystery begins when police show up after one of their clients, Tillie La Salle, is murdered, stabbed through the heart. Unfortunately, one of the officers, DS Mike Kinsey, is Iris's ex - she's never been permitted to tell him the truth of what led to their breakup.

When another of their clients is arrested for the crime, Iris and Gwen are impelled to investigate, especially after the bad publicity affects their business. Iris goes undercover and is embroiled in an official investigation, while Gwen pushes back against her mother-in-law's threat to have her committed.

Of course, they save the day more than once and their client is released - after several close shaves. The Right Sort of Man is the first in a series, and I will be watching for the next entry.
