Mystic Dragon follows Mystic as the second in Jason Denzel's fantasy trilogy. As this episode opens, lowborn Pomella AnDone has been a Mystic's apprentice for seven years, since the events in Mystic. I do recommend reading that first. I hadn't and missed references to the backstory.

There is a growing threat from the mystical realm of Fayün, which is leaking more and more into the mortal world, resulting in chaos. Mystics are sent to deal with these incursions as they occur. Pomella, who has hummingbird familiars, always tries to help the lowest of the low in their society, the Unclaimed. She especially works against the Shadefox, a bandit leader who runs a slave network.

As well as Pomella's adventures, readers follow those of her friend Sim, now a ranger and a plague carrier, as he seeks healing. They're also introduced to young, abused Shevia, who has found a place of refuge where she has made a very powerful friend. The foretelling power that friend gives her allows her to save her family from poisoning, but she ends up apprenticed to vicious Bhairatonix, High Mystic of Qin.

They all come together in Kelt Apar, where the High Mystics meet, and end up on a quest together. There are battles and sacrifices, and eventually the identity of Shevia's friend and power source is revealed - and it's a shocker. When it's all over, Pomella is separated from Sim once more, and their world is changed forever.
