When my sons were young, I found it hard to find engaging chapter books for them. Megan McDonald's Not-So-Lucky Lefty: Judy Moody and Friends, brightly illustrated by Erwin Madrid, has instant appeal.

It has three chapters - Lucky Lefty and Mighty Righty; Pretzilla; and The Ultimate Left-Handed High-Flying Hole in One. Siblings will immediately relate to the rivalry and banter between right-handed Judy and her little, left-handed brother Stink.

The first part is all about a thumb war - Judy dispute's Stink's win, while her brother extols the virtues of left handedness. Finally, Judy agrees 'to be left-handed for one whole entire day.' It's quite the challenge when they visit a pretzel shop, but they are awarded for their Pretzilla.

They win a game of goony golf as a prize. After a successions of failed shots, Judy does hit a hole in one - can you guess where it lands? Not-So-Lucky Lefty is great fun for early readers, especially if they have siblings or are left-handed!
