H
ere's a rather unusual picture book,
The Liszts
by Kyo Maclear and illustrated by Julia Sarda. What does this family of six do? They all make lists till the cows come home, every day except for
listless
Sundays. Mama, Papa, Grandpa, Winifred, Edward and Frederick make lists. Even the '
cat did the same.
'
T
hen a visitor showed up, one who was not on anyone's list! He noticed Edward, who had '
nothing but a list of questions.
' The surprising guest and Edward explored their questions together, and changed the Liszts. The family still made their lists, but now '
they always left a space at the bottom
' ... for the unexpected.
I
expect this intriguing parable will be taken in by children and adults in very different ways. It explores the value of serendipity and spontaneity, versus organization and analysis, in life ... almost art versus science.
