Linda Bailey's Under-The-Bed Fred (illustrated by Colin Jack) is the perfect chapter book for children afraid of the dark. Little ones like Leo, who's convinced there's a monster under his bed.

He feels trapped in his bed, afraid to go to the bathroom during the night as 'the monster was waiting.' But one night he's had enough, so he starts to negotiate with the monster under his bed.

Fred (the monster) is not very frightening - in fact it's Fred who's terrified when Leo says as part of his good night, 'Don't let the bedbugs bite.' However, frightening whoever's in the bed is Fred's job.

Fred does his job well when Sam the Man bullies his new friend, and he accompanies Leo to school show and tell - you can guess how that goes. Under-The-Bed Fred is both funny and fun.
