I
remember in my teens walking down the hill from my home to skate on the rough ice of a frozen lake. The children in Paul Harbridge's
When the Moon Comes
(illustrated by Matt James) do something similar. They head out to enjoy hockey by moonlight.
W
e see the anticipation mount as they wait for everything to be just right. When the beaver flood has frozen and the moon rises, '
large and ready
', they spread the word, '
Tonight's the night.
'
T
hese kids look after each other, checking that everyone has warm enough clothes. They clear the snow, which is light and easy to shovel. Then the game is on! '
End to end and around we fly, the long black stripes of our shadows moving across the moonlit ice ... Magic ice.
