Sam Blackman and Nakayla Robertson are an interracial couple living and working in Ashville, North Carolina. Sam is a veteran and wears an artificial leg. That leg plays a role in this story. Investigators, they love their work and each other.

A movie production company has started filming a book by a local author on the site of the now defunct but once very influential Black Mountain College. Before World War II, Paul Weaver was enrolled. Before he could graduate, he died. His family was told his death was an accident.

Seventy years later, his younger sister has to know if that was true. Did he have an accident or was he killed? Did his color have anything to do with what happened?

The history behind Black Mountain College proves fascinating. But the depiction of the flora and fauna around Ashville held my attention as much as the very intriguing plot. I have been to Ashville and the memory of that trip holds a special place in my heart.

The interaction between Sam and Nakayla is another plus, while the working of the film industry proves to be a big part of the story. Hidden Scars is well worth reading.
