Or at least that's what I thought. But when I read The Whole Way Home by Sarah Creech, I recognized many of stars mentioned in this fictionalized story of the Country music field. I realized that, not only did I know many of the Country stars, but I also recognized their music. The protagonist is country singer and fiddle player Jo Lover. She is on the brink of discovery and will be soon known by her first name alone – as are Loretta, Reba and Dolly. She portrays herself as a 'pretty, sassy, small town girl who pours her heart into her songs.' Circumstances bring her first love, JD Gunn, back into her life. However business matters threaten her really big break. The Whole Way Home takes the reader to the back stage of Country music. You read of the marriages going sour. The drinking. The drugs that are consumed. The flaunting of rules and regulations. The self-discipline necessary to write and play new music. It's a tough way to make a living.
