I've long enjoyed Kathy Reichs' highly popular series (upon which the long-running Bones TV series is based) starring brilliant forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Now she introduces an edgy new lead, Sunday Night, in Two Nights.

Sunnie and her twin brother (hence the title) were raised in a cult compound, and Sunnie in particular was scarred physically and mentally by the experience - we see some of what she suffered through flashbacks. Now, after a stint in the military and her brief career in law enforcement crashed, she hides from the world on Goat Island, but she's about to be pried out of her seclusion by her foster father Beau, a retired policeman.

Wealthy Opaline Drucker wants help in finding her granddaughter Stella, after a bomb killed the girl's mother and younger brother the year before. Stella's body wasn't recovered at the scene. Opaline believes that Stella is being held by the perps, whom the police believe to be terrorists. The search sends Sunnie on the trail of a modern cult and she knows that if Stella is still alive, she shares some of the horrendous experiences of Sunnie's own past. She calls on her brother for help.

As we anticipate, Sunnie does find out what happened to Stella (though it's not quite as expected). It's quite a ride, but what made this thriller really stand out for me are the well written flashbacks to Sunnie's early years. I do hope this isn't a standalone - Sunnie is too good a character to only have one outing.
