Here's a picture book by Esme Shapiro about a small fox (Ooko) seeking a friend. He looks all over the forest (even under a moose) but can't find one.

He sees a girl playing with her dog, which he takes for another fox. Her mother calls her Debbie and Ooko decides that he wants a Debbie too. But it seems to him that 'Debbies don't like me very much.' What to do about it?

Well he tries to make himself look like the Debbies' foxes and does get to play, but finds that 'Debbies aren't very good at games.' Which is when he meets Oomi. The moral of the story? 'To each his own.'
